Mikel Kuehn - Works

Resonances (2007), for soprano saxophone and piano.

Program Note

Resonances, for soprano saxophone and piano, was composed in January of 2007 for John Sampen and Marilyn Shrude as the result of a request for pieces that were loosely based on the popular protest song We Shall Overcome. While the embedding of the tune is not obvious, it does occur on all levels of the piece and is traced slowly by the unison pitches between saxophone and piano. The overall texture is also determined by the idea of “overcoming” as the saxophone gradually prevails over the piano across the work’s duration.
