Mikel Kuehn - Activities

Current Activities

I am thrilled to be a recipient of a 2016 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award in addition to a commission from the Fromm Foundation at Harvard, for which I will be writing a duo for flutist Conor Nelson and pianist Thomas Rosenkranz.

I've just completed a large-scale string quartet for the Spektral Quartet (commissioned through the Barlow Endowment) that is based on the novella sections of Italo Calvino's 1979 novel, If on a winter's night a traveler. It was premiered at the University of Chicago on May 1, 2016. This past spring also saw the premiere of ...blue circles streamed, like rainbows in the sky..., a 17-minute piece for piano and interactive electroacoustics written for Marilyn Nonken. My most recent piece, Entanglements for guitar and harp, was premiered on July 29 at Lincoln Center (Dan Lippel, guitar and Nuiko Wadden, harp). It was commissioned through the International Contemporary Ensemble for the Mostly Mozart OpenICE Micro Commissions Concerts. Finally, I've just finished the production of a portrait album through New Focus Recordings featuring Chicago's Ensemble Dal Niente, and New York's Flexible Music among others; the release date was November 11, 2016.
